Green Smoothie

I have been trying to eat better and one way that I’m trying to do that for myself and for my kids is through more smoothies.  I love smoothies and have a traditional one that I’ve been making for about two years now, but I was still feeling as though I needed a little more.  I don’t like fruit so much and so I try to have a smoothie a few times a week to make myself get some fruit!

Here’s my smoothie that I’ve been making for years:

  • chocolate soy milk
  • frozen strawberries
  • frozen blueberries
  • banana
  • tbsp wheat germ

Very simple!

Here’s the smoothie I made for us the other day:

  • 1 cup almond milk (we have vanilla!)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 medium kale leaves
  • a handful of baby carrots
  • handful of fresh strawberries
  • handful of blueberries
  • 1/2 banana (ours our frozen)
  • tbsp wheat germ
  • little bit of agave for sweetner

The kids said they didn’t like this but I made them drink it all!  😉  I thought it was great and will for sure make this again!

Here’s what I made this morning:

  • 1 cup of almond milk (we have vanilla)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • handful of frozen fruit (mostly peach & mango)
  • a big bunch of spinach
  • handful blueberries
  • agave

My kids loved this!  I did too!  I will for sure use this again.

What I’m learning with smoothies is that there are so many combinations and you can alter any recipe to fit what’s in your fridge on that particular day!

One thing that works for us is that when our banana’s are bad I peel them and put them in freezer bags in the freezer.  Then when it comes to making smoothies I have frozen banana’s on hand ready to go.  I’m not sure if this makes it loose any of its goodness.  I sure hope not!

  1. This sounds great! And actually, did you know the bananas release more nutrients when they are brown? My husband used to manage Smoothie King, and that is when they would use them.

  2. I LOVE the idea for bananas!!! They turn so quickly anymore. Thanks!!!

  3. I LOVE smoothies too! Especially in the warmer weather I have one every morning for breakfast. I make mine very simply: frozen strawberries, bananas, peaches (even canned stuff), milk of any kind, vanilla greek yogurt, and I use whey protein in mine in order for it to stick with me like a meal should. It will tied me over through an entire work out!

My mother in law does not like milk of any kind so her is like this: Juice as a base, she normally uses orange or apple juice, fresh fruit and more yogurt. Hers is sweeter and more tart, but good for a change.

LOVE the ideas you shared, will try them next week myself!

  4. Thanks for sharing! I forget how yummy and easy smoothies can be. Lately I’ve just been using a powdered kind with skim milk and a few ice cubes. I should do a bit of experimenting. Not too sure about the greens in my drink though. I have done this recipe for years:
plain or vanilla yogurt, frozen berries, stevia and protein powder.

  5. Our smoothie this morning was fresh blueberries, fresh strawberries, a whole avacado, the meat and juice of a Thai coconut, a banana and flax seeds (and ice). Throwing in an avacado is a great way for all of us to get our essential fatty acids and to be a bit more satisfied. We have been eating more raw so we are drinking more smoothies too. We also use coconut keifer to avoid milk.
